CranioSacral therapy, as developed by Dr. John Upledger D.O., is an effective way to address the nervous system. In my practice, I have seen incredible results with clients who have suffered brain injuries, stress and anxiety disorders, migraines, headaches, and soft tissue damage from accidents. I have also worked with postpartum women who are dealing with Postpartum Depression and Anxiety and are also healing from traumatic birth experiences with great results.
This work addresses the soft tissue that works with the nervous system and the fascial layer of the body. When soft tissue gets twisted or tightens in response to trauma or how we choose to hold our bodies in response to everyday life, it can create pain or dysfunction. We can work directly with these tissues to help them unwind the response and alleviate the results that are being created.
Strictly speaking from the nervous system point, many of my clients respond with the expression of feeling “reset” or like their brain has “calmed down” or is “less noisy.” Clients are able to focus more clearly, take the time to respond to situations rather than react, and sleep more soundly. I believe that what is happening is that we’re increasing the range of the nervous system to be able to take more information in. Living in a high stress society with a constant barrage of stimuli, people are literally decreasing the bandwidth of their systems. CST work takes the time to expand this bandwidth and show the body how much more room there actually is. It also helps to remove the clutter that is taking up space so you can respond to the things that are most important in your life, like family, friends, and YOU. It’s very much like rebooting your computer or your phone, applying new settings, and throwing away all of the junk mail or malware.
This is just the basics of what Craniosacral Therapy can do, the applications are vast and specialization is available. You can visit Upledger.com for more information or to find a therapist near you or a loved one you believe can benefit from this amazing modality.
Emily provides CranioSacral Therapy for Adults, Infants, Children, Seniors, and all Perinatal Stages.
Infants and Newborns
Craniosacral Therapy for newborns, infants and children is highly beneficial for many concerns that parents may have for their children.
Newborns and Infants: At Conscious Living, we specialize in working with infants that have latching or breastfeeding challenges, birth trauma, reflux/colic, sleep challenges, torticollis (difficulty with equal head rotation from right to left) and plagiocephaly (the bones of the skull are misshapen/imbalanced). Children can be seen as early as a few days old and it is highly recommended to get them in as soon as you recognize any of these challenges. When children are seen later, it typically takes more sessions to find balance.
Sessions are designed for 45 minutes of hands on work with each newborn or infant. Feeding your child during the session is welcomed. Typically, you will see changes from the first session, and a second session may be needed simply as a follow-up. In cases where multiple sessions are necessary, this will be discussed. Typically with challenging births, plagiocephaly, colic/reflux and sleep challenges, three sessions or more are necessary for lasting changes. You may see any of these challenges show up at developmental stages and later in life. If you do see them, please bring them back in for a re-evaluation to maintain the balance the body had once found.
Children can come for CST sessions for things as varied as ADD/ADHD, sensory processing challenges, emotional challenges, impaired immune systems, abnormal muscle tone and missing developmental milestones.
CST works with the nervous system to help it self-regulate, thus helping the child to manage input that is typically too stressful or overloads the system. This very gentle, non-invasive therapy can be done with the child on the massage table or the floor as they read or play. Your child does not need to “stay still” or be “good” during the session, we can follow them around as they explore and move with their play during the session. Children with sensory processing challenges or Autism may benefit from shorter and more frequent sessions to get comfortable with their therapist and the environment.
Emily started receiving CST work after a snowboarding incident that broke her tailbone and caused significant low back pain. After her tailbone fused in a broken state, she finally found a CST practitioner that was able to help calm the pain and restrictions caused by the trauma. She began studying CST after seeing firsthand how the therapy works for the body. Since then, she has received treatment to address migraines, stress and anxiety related to childhood trauma and PTSD, as well as Postpartum Depression.
Adults can find similar benefits that Emily experienced since her first treatment in 2001. She has worked with clients with chronic pain, concussions, migraines, vertigo, PTSD, TMJ Disorder, stress and anxiety, and sleep disorders.
With people living longer, we are seeing more challenges with maintaining plasticity of the brain and its structures. Individuals and families are concerned with memory, Alzheimer’s Disease, and keeping a strong mind and body as we age. Studies are showing that maintaining the fluid movement through the brain aids in removing waste products that contribute to a decrease in mental clarity. They are also finding that lack of sleep is another major contributor, and there are many causes to one’s inability to sleep. Restrictions in the sinuses, repetitive thought patterns, stress and anxiety all contribute to an inability to sleep fully. Craniosacral therapy can assist in these challenges.
Perinatal Stages Including Conception and Birth
When we consider conception, craniosacral therapy is beneficial in “preparing the nest.” Many women deal with heavy periods, clotting, and cramping during or near their cycles. These things may be caused by a tilted uterus that pulls on the ligaments that attach to the bony structures of the pelvis. If there is pelvic misalignment, CST work can balance the movement of those bones as well as the fascial layers that hold the uterus in place. If there has been any trauma to this area of the body, including multiple miscarriages, we can address how the body is holding this trauma on a physical level thus opening and balancing the tissues and optimising the body for pregnancy.
Clients that are seeking alternative options for pregnancy, including IUI and in vitro fertilization, can benefit from the balancing found through CST work. Decreasing the stress in the nervous system, balancing the hormones and responses to the preparation for these procedures can both assist in the success of these options. These procedures and the choices clients have to make can wreak havoc on couples who want children of their own. This adds tension to the nervous system not typically felt by couples who are able to have children without medical assistance. We’re here to help your system stay neutral and move through this process as gently as possible.
At Conscious Living, we have found success with clients who are at 40+ weeks of gestation and seeking options for induction. While CST does not guarantee natural induction, it can assist in calming the mother as she nears labor and balancing the body and nervous system. There are many reasons labor doesn’t start when we want it, and many times there is fear or other worries that begin to tap the nervous system. Regaining balance or simply creating awareness of these things can help the body be ready for labor.
